Plasterboard: buying guide

We sell plasterboard by the sheet in 12.5mm and 15mm, with tapered or square edges and a range of specialist boards. Here’s how to pick the right one and work out what else you need.

Tapered edge or square edge?

  • Tapered edge boards have a shallow recess along the long edges so the joints can be taped and filled flush, ready for decoration without a full skim.
  • Square edge boards are normally skimmed with finish plaster, such as Thistle BoardFinish or MultiFinish.

Which type of board?

  • Standard – everyday walls and ceilings.
  • Fire resistant – used in fire-rated walls and ceilings as part of a tested system.
  • Moisture resistant – for bathrooms, kitchens and other humid areas (not for direct water exposure).
  • Soundboard – a denser board for partitions and ceilings where sound insulation matters.
  • Vapour board – foil-backed to act as a vapour control layer on external walls and ceilings below cold roofs.
  • Platinum and perforated acoustic boards – for higher specifications and acoustic ceilings.

12.5mm is the standard thickness for walls and ceilings; 15mm is stiffer and is common in fire and acoustic systems. For insulated boards see insulated plasterboard.

Screws, adhesive and jointing

British Gypsum guidance is for screws at 300mm centres on walls and 230mm on ceilings, long enough to go at least 10mm into metal or 25mm into timber. For dot and dab onto masonry use Gyproc DriWall Adhesive. Our plasterboard & fixings calculator works out boards, screws, adhesive, tape and filler or skim plaster from your room size, and the partition and MF ceiling calculators cover the metal framing.

Frequently asked questions

What size plasterboard do you sell?

Tapered edge in 2400, 2500, 2700 and 3000 × 1200mm, and square edge in 2400 and 2700 × 1200mm and 1800 × 900mm, depending on type and thickness. Each product name shows the size and thickness.

How many sheets of plasterboard do I need?

A 2400 × 1200mm sheet covers 2.88m². Work out the wall and ceiling area, take off doors and windows, add around 10% waste and divide by the sheet area. The plasterboard calculator does it for you, with screws and finishing materials.

What length drywall screws do I need?

The screw should be the board thickness plus at least 10mm into metal studs or 25mm into timber (British Gypsum). So 25mm fine thread for one layer of 12.5mm board on metal, and around 38mm coarse thread into timber.

Can I use moisture resistant board in a shower?

Moisture resistant board is for humid areas such as bathrooms and kitchens. Areas that get wet directly, like shower enclosures, need a suitable tile backer board, such as Coolag Tilebacker, and waterproofing.

Do I need to skim tapered edge boards?

No. Tapered edge boards are designed to be taped and jointed. You can still skim them if you prefer a plastered finish.

Is there a minimum order and how much is delivery?

There’s a £400 ex VAT minimum order on insulation and building materials. Delivery to England and Wales is free on every order.
