Suspended ceilings: buying guide

A suspended (lay-in) ceiling is a grid of metal tees hung from the soffit on wires, with 600 × 600mm tiles dropped in. It hides services, keeps access easy and gives a clean finish in offices, shops, schools and commercial kitchens.

What you need

  • Main runners (3600mm) at 1200mm centres, hung on wire.
  • 1200mm cross tees clipped between the mains at 600mm centres.
  • 600mm cross tees between the 1200mm tees to make 600 × 600mm openings.
  • Perimeter wall angle fixed round the room to carry the edge tiles.
  • Hanger wire and fixings to the soffit, and ceiling tiles to fill the grid.

We currently stock the Rockfon T24 Click system in white (A1 reaction to fire, according to the Declaration of Performance), Hampton galvanised suspension wire and TVS CleanCare tiles. Use grid components from one system only so the tees lock together properly.

Choosing tiles

Think about where the ceiling is going: washable or hygienic tiles such as TVS CleanCare suit kitchens and healthcare, while acoustic tiles reduce echo in offices and classrooms. Check each tile’s edge detail matches a 24mm exposed grid.

Frequently asked questions

How many ceiling tiles do I need?

Each 600 × 600mm tile covers 0.36m², but cut tiles round the edges mean you need more than area divided by 0.36. The suspended ceiling calculator counts full and cut tiles for your room.

How far apart are the hangers?

In a standard grid the main runners are at 1200mm centres, with hangers at no more than 1200mm along each main runner and within 600mm of the walls. Always follow the grid manufacturer’s installation guide.

Can I mix grid from different manufacturers?

No. Main runners and cross tees are designed to lock together within one system, so use components from a single grid system.

Is there a minimum order on ceilings?

Yes, £150 ex VAT on suspended ceiling grid, tiles and wire. Delivery is £35 ex VAT under £300 ex VAT and free over £300 ex VAT, to England and Wales.

Can light panels go in the grid?

Standard 600 × 600mm LED panels and grilles drop into the grid in place of a tile. Heavier fittings may need their own supports, so check with the fitting manufacturer.
