How to use the calculator

  1. Measure the room wall to wall and enter the length and width in metres.
  2. Pick your ceiling tiles and grid system. Items we can’t sell online show ‘call for price’.
  3. Leave the main tee direction on automatic, or choose one to suit your lights and services.
  4. Tap any tiles on the drawing that won’t be needed (light panels, grilles, columns).
  5. Check the list, then press Add whole kit to basket, or email it to us for a quote.

How we calculate

  • Setting out: the grid is centred in the room so the cut tiles at opposite walls are the same size and never less than half a tile.
  • Main tees run at 1200mm centres. They’re worked out from a cutting list that reuses offcuts, so a 4.8m run takes one full 3600mm length plus a 1200mm piece.
  • 1200mm cross tees clip between the mains at 600mm centres. At the walls, cut pieces sit on the wall angle; if the two border pieces in a row add up to 1200mm or less, one tee does both.
  • 600mm cross tees split each 1200 x 600 opening into two 600 x 600 openings (600 x 600 tiles only).
  • Wall angle runs round the whole perimeter, again from a cutting list.
  • Hangers go within 600mm of each wall and at no more than 1200mm centres along every main tee. Wire length is the drop plus 300mm for twisting.
  • Tiles: every full and cut tile is counted, less the ones you leave out, then the waste allowance is added and we round up to whole boxes.
  • Grid has a £150 ex VAT minimum order. We’ll tell you if your kit is under it.

Questions

Which way should the main tees run?

Usually whichever way needs less grid, which is what the automatic setting picks. Run them the other way if you want the tile joints to line up with a feature, or if light fittings or air-con units need a particular direction.

Why are my border tiles not a full 600mm?

Few rooms are an exact number of tiles. We centre the grid so both sides get the same cut and no cut is smaller than half a tile, which looks better and is easier to fit.

What about light panels and grilles?

600 x 600 LED panels and grilles drop into the grid in place of a tile. Tap those tiles on the drawing to leave them out. Heavy fittings need their own hangers, so ask your electrician.

My room isn’t a rectangle. What do I do?

Split it into rectangles, work each one out and add the lists together, or send us your drawing and we’ll do it for you.

Is there a minimum order?

Ceiling grid has a £150 ex VAT minimum. Grid delivery is £35 ex VAT under £300 ex VAT and free over £300 ex VAT to England and Wales. Fixings come from our general range, which has a £400 ex VAT minimum, so leave them off if you’re only buying the ceiling.
