British Gypsum plaster: buying guide

Thistle plasters come in two groups: undercoats, which build up and level a background, and finish plasters, which give the smooth final surface. Gyproc DriWall Adhesive is for fixing plasterboard to masonry by dot and dab. All are sold per 25kg bag.

Which plaster do I need?

  • Onto plasterboard: Thistle BoardFinish or Thistle MultiFinish, 2mm thick.
  • Onto undercoats or mixed backgrounds: Thistle MultiFinish, which suits a wide range of backgrounds.
  • Undercoat on brick and block: Thistle HardWall for most masonry, including aircrete blocks.
  • Undercoat on low-suction surfaces: Thistle BondingCoat for smooth dense blocks, concrete and surfaces treated with a bonding agent.

  • MultiFinish and BoardFinish: approx. 10m² per bag at 2mm.
  • HardWall: approx. 3m² per bag at 11mm.
  • BondingCoat: approx. 2.75m² per bag at 11mm.

Storage

Gypsum plasters have a limited shelf life (check the use-by date on the bag) and must be stored dry, off the floor. Order close to when you’ll use them.

Frequently asked questions

MultiFinish or BoardFinish?

BoardFinish is designed mainly for plasterboard (its data sheet lists the other suitable backgrounds). MultiFinish suits a wider range of backgrounds, including undercoat plasters as well as plasterboard, which is why many plasterers use it for most jobs.

How much does a bag of MultiFinish cover?

British Gypsum gives approximately 10m² per 25kg bag at 2mm thick.

HardWall or BondingCoat?

HardWall is for most brick and block backgrounds. BondingCoat is for low-suction surfaces such as smooth dense blocks and concrete, or surfaces treated with a bonding agent.

How much DriWall Adhesive do I need?

British Gypsum states around two 2400 × 1200mm boards per 25kg bag under normal use. Uneven walls use more. The plasterboard calculator works it out for you.

How long does plaster keep?

Gypsum plaster has a limited shelf life, shown as a use-by date on the bag. Keep bags dry and off the floor, and use them before that date.

Is there a minimum order and how much is delivery?
