Drylining: buying guide
Drylining uses metal framing and plasterboard to build partitions, line walls and form suspended ceilings. It’s quick, clean and lighter than masonry. Here’s what goes into a typical job.
Metal stud partitions
A partition is made of track fixed to the floor and ceiling, with C studs usually at 600mm centres for 1200mm-wide boards. Choose the stud size for the wall height and any acoustic or fire requirements: bigger studs span higher. Deep track (50mm leg) is used at the head to allow for deflection. Add acoustic roll in the cavity to reduce sound.
MF suspended ceilings
An MF ceiling uses MF7 primary channels hung from the soffit, MF5 ceiling sections clipped beneath with MF9 connecting clips, and MF6A perimeter channel around the edge, then plasterboard screwed to the MF5 sections.
Wall lining
Gypliner systems line uneven or masonry walls on a metal frame, leaving room for services and insulation. For direct bonding to masonry, use dot and dab adhesive.
Finishing
Screw boards with the right drywall screws, then finish joints with tape and filler, or skim with plaster. Protect external corners with beads.
Calculators
Our free drywall partition calculator, MF ceiling calculator and plasterboard & fixings calculator work out sections, board, screws and finishing materials from your dimensions, priced live.

Frequently asked questions
What size metal studs do I need?
It depends on the wall height, the boards and any fire or acoustic performance required. Larger studs span higher. Check the manufacturer’s height tables, or call us with your wall height and we’ll help.
What centres should metal studs be at?
Studs are usually at 600mm centres for 1200mm-wide boards. Some fire, acoustic or tall walls need closer centres, so follow the system specification.
Are metal studs sold individually?
Metal sections are sold in packs of 10 lengths of the same size and length.
What’s the difference between standard and deep track?
Standard track has 25mm legs. Deep track has 50mm legs and is used at the head of a partition to allow for movement or deflection of the structure above.
Do access panels have the same minimum order?
No. FlipFix access panels have no minimum order, with £15 ex VAT delivery under £300 ex VAT and free delivery above. The rest of the drylining range has a £400 ex VAT minimum order.
Is there a minimum order and how much is delivery?
There’s a £400 ex VAT minimum order on insulation and building materials. Delivery to England and Wales is free on every order.
