Plasterboard Sizes UK: Sheet Sizes, Thicknesses and Types
Most plasterboard in the UK comes in one standard sheet size, but you can also get longer sheets, smaller sheets, two main thicknesses and two edge types, and a range of special boards for fire, moisture, sound and insulation. This guide sets out the sizes we stock, what each one is for and how to work out how many sheets you need.
Quick answer
- Standard sheet: 2400 × 1200mm, 12.5mm thick, covering 2.88m².
- Longer sheets of 2500, 2700 and 3000mm suit taller walls, so you avoid horizontal joints.
- Small sheets of 1800 × 900mm are easier to handle in tight spaces, lofts and small rooms.
- Thickness: 12.5mm is the everyday board for walls and ceilings. 15mm is used where a fire, sound or stiffness specification calls for it.
- Edges: use tapered edge if you're taping and filling the joints, and square edge if you're skimming the whole surface.

Why sheets are 1200mm wide
A 1200mm sheet lines up with studs and joists at the two usual spacings: two bays at 600mm centres or three bays at 400mm centres. That means every vertical edge of the sheet lands on a stud or joist, where it can be fixed. Set out your framing so this works from the first sheet, and check what centres your stud system or board specification calls for. Our metal stud partition guide explains stud centres in more detail.
Choosing the length
Pick the shortest sheet that covers the full floor-to-ceiling height in one piece. Joints across the middle of a wall take more time to tape and fill and are harder to hide.
- Up to about 2.4m high: 2400 × 1200mm sheets.
- 2.5m ceilings: 2500mm sheets.
- Older houses and taller rooms up to 2.7m: 2700mm sheets.
- Up to 3m: 3000mm sheets.
Longer sheets are heavier and more awkward to carry up stairs, so allow for two people. The 1800 × 900mm square-edge sheet is the one to choose when access is tight or you're working alone overhead.
12.5mm or 15mm?
12.5mm is the standard thickness for walls and ceilings in homes. 15mm is stiffer and heavier, and it is the thickness many fire-rated and acoustic wall and ceiling systems are tested with. If you're building to a particular fire or sound specification, use exactly the board thickness, number of layers and stud or joist centres it lists. Don't swap 15mm for 12.5mm to save money.
Tapered edge or square edge?
- Tapered edge boards have long edges that slope slightly on the face side. When two sheets butt together, this forms a shallow recess for tape and jointing compound, so you can finish the joint flush without skimming the whole wall. Use them for dry lining with tape and filler.
- Square edge boards have flat edges and are usually used where the whole surface will be skimmed with a finish plaster, or where the joints will be covered.
Both types can be skimmed. Tapered edge is simply the one to pick if you want the tape-and-fill option. You'll find tapes, beads and jointing compounds in our beads, tapes and fillers range.
Special boards and their sizes
Special boards come mostly in 2400 × 1200mm, in 12.5mm and 15mm thicknesses. Prices are per sheet, ex VAT, at the time of writing:
| Board | Used for | 12.5mm | 15mm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire resistant | Walls and ceilings built to a fire-rated specification | £12.49 | £14.58 |
| Moisture resistant | Bathrooms, kitchens and utility rooms | £12.49 | £14.58 |
| Soundboard | Walls and ceilings where noise matters | £12.49 | £14.58 |
| Vapour | The warm side of insulated walls and ceilings | £13.33 | £17.49 |
| Platinum | A higher-spec board (see the product page for its performance) | £17.08 | £22.08 |
We also stock fire resistant square-edge board in 1800 × 900mm (£7.33). For bathrooms, read our guide to moisture resistant vs vapour plasterboard, and for sound, our guide to sound plasterboard.
Insulated plasterboard sizes
Insulated plasterboard is also 2400 × 1200mm. Its thickness is quoted as insulation plus board, so a 62.5mm sheet is 50mm of insulation bonded to 12.5mm plasterboard. We stock Mannok MLK and Kingspan Kooltherm K118 in thicknesses from 37.5mm upwards. At the time of writing, a 37.5mm Mannok MLK sheet is £37.91 ex VAT. For fitting, see our guide on how to fit insulated plasterboard to a solid wall.
How many sheets do I need?
- Measure each wall or ceiling (length × height) in metres and add the areas together.
- Take off large openings such as doors and big windows.
- Divide by the area of one sheet (2.88m² for 2400 × 1200mm) and round up.
- Add around 10% for cutting and waste.
For example, a 4m × 2.4m wall is 9.6m². 9.6 ÷ 2.88 = 3.3, so you need 4 sheets for one side, plus some spare for cuts around openings. Our free plasterboard calculator works this out for whole rooms, including screws, and prices it live. Frequently asked questions
What size is a standard sheet of plasterboard in the UK?
2400 × 1200mm, usually 12.5mm thick. One sheet covers 2.88m².
What thickness of plasterboard should I use on a ceiling?
12.5mm is the usual choice for ceilings in homes. Where a ceiling needs to meet a fire or sound specification, use the board type, thickness and fixing centres that the specification sets out, which is often 15mm.
Can I use 9.5mm plasterboard?
We don't stock 9.5mm board. Our thinnest standard board is 12.5mm, which is the usual thickness for walls and ceilings.
Is 2400 × 1200mm plasterboard the same as 8ft × 4ft?
Close, but not the same. 8ft × 4ft is about 2438 × 1219mm, so metric sheets are slightly smaller. Always plan with the metric sizes.
